Sacked by the DWP after 34 years’ service for depression – and then found ‘fit for work’ by DWP/AtoS after 34 years’ service for depression – and then found ‘fit for work’ by DWP/AtoS

CLAIMS of government action to help mental health sufferers back to work have a hollow ring for former civil servant Jane. She says she was thrown onto the scrap heap by the Department of Work and Pensions itself.

Instead of being supported during a mental breakdown she was fired on Christmas Eve and has since been in “a living nightmare”. She is now suing her former employers for unfair dismissal and disability discrimination.

Does it matter whom the employer is?
DWP/ Royal Mail / Local Authority /High street Bank or Little back street firm, it's the same impact on anyone who has lost their job through illness/disability.

"Jane's" story originally appeared in a media publication on Sunday.

How can "Jane" claim "disability discrimination' from her former employers when she herself admitted in this article she failed to inform them of her mental health issues.

Then further, has allowed the story to be published in a national newspaper before she has even taken the case to an Employment tribunal?
:-o

Anon, Fill your boots with your personal attacks and vindictive posts, if it makes you feel better to attack someone personally on a public forum when your angst is with your former employer.

The link on this discussion is out in the public domain.

'Jane' allowed her story to be told and I am afraid she will now be open to comments. Good and Bad.

The paper further sensationalised the headlines as it was a former DWP member of staff.
I simply reiterated the facts. and I stand by my every word. It matter's not the former employer, many who come here would have lost jobs because of ill health, it is not a new story.

The simple fact is the story repeatedly contradicts itself. It's terrible journalism.

'Jane' accepted a promotion (and pay rise) within the JCP, and still failed to inform them of her MH condition.

'Jane' failed to tell her employer she had a MH issue, yet she is intending on claiming disability discrimination against her former DWP/JCP employers.

'Jane' is further taking them to Employment Tribunal, so she broadcasts her story in a newspaper?

'Jane' needs to accept the fact that she has MH issues herself, and learn to overcome the stigma she herself puts on MH. This is confirmed in the article as she 'hid' it from her former employers and still hides from her own family?

'Jane' thinks no-one in her former office or within the vast empire which is the DWP will fail to connect the dots and bring this newspaper story up in any tribunal.

The old saying goes One cannot have their cake and eat it.

Just want to give another slant to this - and I am not "Jane"!

There is something known as "smiling depression" this is where the person becomes so good at covering up the illness by putting on a brave face and telling everyone he/she is fine , only to break down as soon as the person is on their own. I should know - I did this for years. My parents, family and friends knew nothing about it - I was only seeing them from time to time and for short periods so became able to act "normal" in their company. I felt unable to tell them as many of them are still of the old school - there's nothing wrong with you., you're not ill, you should be at work etc etc

In this respect I can understand Jane's position.
