i have just been diagnosed with Wegeners granulomatosis (on top of suffering with ehlers danlos syndrome)..... spent a few days in hospital and thankfully they managed to save my life (for now!) i am having chemotherapyand steroids introvenously (sp) every 2 weeks at the moment....... i feel lucky to be alive......... then i get a letter of the DWP saying i have to go for a work focused interview (it has been a year since my last as the nice lady could see i was genuinely sick.... better than atos!!) obviously i am not up to this so my mum called and explained and whilst she was on the phone the lady said my esa contribuiton based was finishing on 23 august and i would need to apply for income based so she called and got the form... filled it in and sent it off :crossed letter arrives this morning (could someone explain how the dreaded brown envelope always arrives on the mat on a saturday??) i opened the envelope and great news i am entitled to income based esa!!!! at a reduced rate.... they have taken £160 a month off me!!!! i am apparently entitled to £67 a week, i am having to get taxis to the hospital to receive my treatments, taxis to the doctors and taxis to get my blood tests done...... sorry for the self pitying post but i can't get my head round the fact that i am fighting for my life and this sh*tty government are still beating me with a bl*ody great stick ~x( ~x( ~x(

Hi Kiki,

I'm sorry to hear that your ESA money has dropped so drastically. I would contact either the CAB or the Welfare Rights to find out if you are entitled to any other benefits, now that your income is reduced. :crossed

my mum said i should claim DLA but i am a proud person who is not happy at being on benefits plus i really don't want to be put through another medical, at this present time i really could do without having to try and deal with ATOS. a friend of mine suspects that i should request to be switched into the esa support group immediately and that if i do so before my 12 month contribution based expires i should remain on the same money......... her basis is that there are special rules for people to be put into the support group and receiving iv chemotherapy is one of them and when we told the dwp over the phone i was going for chemo every 2 weeks they should have switched me immediately :facehand

Receiving Chemo intravenously is one of the Support Group descriptors. Have a look at the link at the top of my signature. If you have any of those, then you should be in the SG.

I can understand about having pride, and not wanting to be on benefits, but if you've paid into the system, you were paying for times like these. It's your money you'll be claiming back.

Have a look here viewtopic.php?f=17&t=51 It's about DLA. DLA is all about what you can't do, as opposed to ESA which is about what you can do.

thanks Tendo, i looked at the esa support group guide but couldn't see anything about chemotherapy...... i did however come across a pdf handbook for the DWP which does state intravenous chemo should be na immediate pass to esa support group, it is annoying as 3 times my mum told them i have to go to the hospital fortnightly for chemotherapy and steroid drips..... i have to go for my treatment tomorrow and will be there for 6 hours so it will more than likely be tuesday before i can call the dwp and then i will feel shocking...... i have posted the link to the dwp handbook..... not sure if it will be of any use to anyone else on this site

Thanks for the pdf. I've seen it before somewhere, but not sure if it's here or not.

Remember that the DWP won't take your word for things. You need to get a letters from your GP and Consultant to back up what you write. This applies to both ESA and DLA.

I hope you don't feel too bad after your Chemo treatment tomorrow. :crossed

Take care of yourself.

Have you sent in an HC1 application for an HC2 certificate, so you can claim your travel expenses back from the hospital.
Sorry I don't have any links for you, maybe someone with more "getupandgo" can help me out here.

Fing hell mate, it's what they've reduced us to do, I won't hijack this topic or I'll get a roasting about it, so I'll reply to you in another new topic but you'll need to guess which one it is.

This link tells you about claiming travel expenses back from hospital visits http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAnd ... G_10018959 :-)

i haven't ever claimed any travel expenses, i have always managed to get by paying for stuff myself but obviously with frequent hospital trips doctors trips the taxi fares mount up so it is something i may need to look at. my mum has just called the benefits advice line attached to our local council on the reccomendation of a friend who deals with this stuff regulalrly...... according to them they seem to think that as i am just being switched from contribution based esa over to income based esa they think my money should stay the same :bang :bang no doubt that is wrong, can't get through to the dwp as the phone system keeps saying we can't take your call :facehand

A lot of members who get nowhere with the DWP, then go straight to their MP/Councillor. Perhaps your Mum could do that for you? It would save time and effort, by going straight to the top, so to speak. You'll get contact details here http://www.writetothem.com/ . Just put your postcode in. You might think that it's a bit dramatic, but it's what they get paid for, helping their constituents. And you won't get pushed from pillar to post. Just one contact person, who will do all the work for you and your Mum.

well my mum called the DWP for me and the lady she spoke to said that yes under the special rules i should be in the support group as i am on chemotherapy IV......... she said that they had 5 days to make a decision and that would be yesterday i think...apparently the lad who spoke to my mum before lied (what a surprise) and they hadn't even got my form! the lady said that she could confirm my form was with the DM and this is the best bit....... whilst they try not to call people in who are receiving IV chemotherapy for a medical she couldn't state i wouldn't need to attend!!!!!! WTF is the point of "special rules" then???
my mum told me to ring the gp and get a letter stating that i was receiving iv chemo and my condition but the receptionist at the drs said i needed to be seen.... so off i went, i explained to the gp what had happened with my benefit being reduced and how they said i "may" need to attend a medical, she was livid and said there was no way on earth i should be being bothered by the DWP as i needed time to recover from my treatment, she gave me a sick note for 4 weeks and said that i should hand it in and it should be seen by a doctor at the DWP who would read my diagnosis and treatment and they should leave me alone. she said i should go back in a month (she could only sign me off for 4 weeks) and there would be absolutely no issue with me being signed off again for a longer period....... my issue is as i am already receiving ESA for WRAG with a different condition will it confuse things me handing in a sicknote???........ i filled in a form for changes as i was needing to be switChed to income based esa from contribution based esa and i did name my new condition on there but they didn't send me a medical form (the questionaIre thing that you name your conditions and it's effect on you ESA50?)....... should i just hang onto the sicknote and see what the DM says and then hand it in after

surprise surprise, i never heard from the DWP with regard the decision so i called, the chap on the phone couldn't understand what i was on about.... all he kept saying was they had received my esa3 form..... which must have been the changes form where i listed my income and also put down my new disease... i think they should have send me out the medical questionnaire too. he could not understand why i was told the form was with the decision maker and the only he could say was that some information had been passed to the medical department.......... no doubt this means even though i am on chemo i will get called in by atos, he emailed some info over to somebody who called me back and they have said i now have to write in with new medical evidence and request that the decision maker look at my case again and put me in the support group, i gave them my gp details so why the hell can't they just ask them to fax the info over to save me taking up yet another appointment that somebody else desperately needs to get a letter to say i am ill...... totally p*ssed off with the whole thing and yes my money will drop down to £67 a week and if the DM decides to put me in the support group i *should* get it back dated

just to update, i finally received a letter yesterday stating they were paying £156 into my bank account.... i can only assume my money has been re-instated to it's full amount and that i am now in the support group although nobody has told me that! i have drawn that conclusion due to the money being paid to me.... what a faff to get things sorted out
